Folk Legends: The Water Monkeys, According to the folklore, “water ghosts,” also known as “water monkeys,” are those who drowned, committed suicide or died in an accident with heavy resentment. They will wander where they drowned as a water ghosts. They wait patiently in the water, to lure, or force people to fall into the water and die, to be their own scapegoat. For thousands of years, the water ghosts gained reincarnation through this method, to get avoid suffering from hell. During the Republican period, there was a place surrounded by mountains called the “Tianshui Village,” where Grandpa Tai was born, and the villagers, under the leadership of the village chief Qian Xing, though not rich, lived a peaceful life. Until one night, the great grandfather returned from a boat, all kinds of bizarre things started occurring in the village.
